The 78th Cannes Film Festival, starting on May 13, has rolled out stricter red carpet regulations, officially banning nudity and “excessively voluminous” clothing.

The move follows recent controversies, including a topless protestor at the 2022 festival and Bianca Censori’s transparent ensemble at this year’s Grammy, both of which reportedly influenced the festival’s updated guidelines.

In an official statement, organisers clarified that the rules have been made explicit to align with longstanding practices and French law. It read, "This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law."

The festival now reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone whose outfit might obstruct guest movement or create seating issues in screening venues.
