BLACKPINK’s highly anticipated return has been overshadowed by controversy after the group’s full ‘Deadline’ album reportedly surfaced online days before its scheduled release on 27 February. The unexpected leak, which allegedly included complete track files and detailed production credits, prompted immediate backlash from fans and raised new questions about the role of American producer Dr Luke in the project.

The files, which appeared briefly on BLACKPINK’s official YouTube channel, were removed quickly. Neither the group nor their agency, YG Entertainment, has issued a statement addressing how the leak occurred or why the disputed producer appeared in the credits.

Album leak sparks outrage

According to multiple Koreaboo, all tracks from ‘Deadline’ briefly became accessible after being mistakenly uploaded to the group’s YouTube backend. The accidental posting also displayed full songwriting and production details for each track. Screenshots circulating on social media appeared to show that all four BLACKPINK members contributed to writing lyrics for the title track, “GO.”

Fans immediately criticised the situation, with many accusing YG Entertainment of orchestrating the leak as an unconventional promotional tactic. Others expressed frustration at the silence from the company as discussions spread rapidly across online communities.

Dr. Luke’s name in credits fuels backlash

The leak intensified when fans examined the production credits of the mini-album’s five songs. Two tracks – “Me and My” and “Champion” – reportedly listed Dr. Luke, born Łukasz Gottwald, as a contributor.

Dr. Luke has produced major chart-topping hits but has remained a deeply polarising figure in the music industry. In 2014, singer Kesha filed a lawsuit accusing him of drugging her, sexually assaulting her, and exerting abusive control over her career. Dr. Luke consistently denied the allegations, and the long-running legal battle concluded with a settlement in 2023. High-profile artists including P!nk and Kelly Clarkson have previously spoken critically about working with him.

With his name appearing on BLACKPINK’s leaked credits, many fans questioned the decision to involve a producer with such a contentious past. Online criticism surged, with posts expressing disappointment and calls for clarification from YG Entertainment.

No official response

The alleged leaks have since been scrubbed from all platforms, and YG Entertainment has remained silent on both the accidental upload and Dr. Luke’s reported involvement. Meanwhile, fans continue to debate the implications as the group prepares to release Deadline as planned.

The mini-album features five tracks: the pre-release single ‘Jump,’ the lead song ‘GO,’ and additional tracks ‘Me and My,’ ‘Champion,’ and ‘Fxxxboy.’ ‘Deadline’ marks BLACKPINK’s first group project since their 2022 album ‘Born Pink’, heightening anticipation despite the ongoing controversy.
