Kozhikode: There is no beauty that can match the lullaby sung by a mother to her child, filled with affection. In the song sung from a mother's heart, there is love and dreams. When the lyrics penned by Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, capturing a mother's tenderness and care, were set to music by Mohan Sithara, one of the beloved lullabies of Malayalam cinema was born. This cherished lullaby is now making waves in Bollywood as well.
The blue-eyed princess, Raha Kapoor, the daughter of Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, also sleeps to the melody of this beautiful lullaby. Alia mentioned on ‘The Great Indian Kapil Sharma Show’ about singing this Malayalam lullaby to put Raha to sleep. The song 'Unni Vavavo' was featured in the 1991 film ‘Sandhwanam’, directed by Sibi Malayil, and Alia said that Ranbir has been learning the song recently. When it’s time for Raha to sleep, she says "Mama Vavo, Papa Vavo," Alia added. The couple learned the song from a Malayali nurse, Suma Nair.
The melody of a child’s mind, the song that touches the soul
It is astonishing that 'Unni Vavavo' remains in the hearts of people even after 32 years. Music knows no language or barriers. This is a song that touches my soul, and it brings me immense joy that it continues to delight children beyond language.
— Kaithapram Damodaran Namboothiri, Lyricist
A melody passed down by my mother
'Unni Vavavo' is a lullaby arranged in such a way that even those who cannot sing can hum along to it. It is a song from an era. Hearing that this song is still sung to lull children to sleep fills me with immense happiness. The lullabies sung by my mother were the inspiration for the melody I arranged. When Kaithapram thought of it, I infused the music, and the song succeeded.
— Mohan Sithara, Composer
My favorite lullaby
This is a lullaby loved by children. I have also sung it to my daughter. I have seen many people sharing videos of the song going viral again. It brings me a lot of joy.
