In his wish, Afsal referred to MG Sreekumar as "the undisputed king of repeat-value songs”

Haripad-born playback legend M.G. Sreekumar, a voice that continues to echo through the hearts of Malayalis across generations, celebrates his birthday on May 25. Singer Afsal was among the first to extend warm wishes, taking to social media to laud Sreekumar as “the undisputed king of repeat-value songs”.
In a heartfelt post, Afsal wrote, “Birthday wishes to our very own Sreekuttan Chettan. The emotional resonance of the hundreds of timeless songs rendered in this voice is truly beyond words.” He also shared a cherished photograph of himself with the veteran singer, expressing his hopes for M.G. Sreekumar’s continued health and wellbeing.
The two singers have collaborated on several beloved tracks including Thinkale Poothinkale from Kalyanaraman, Autokkaran Josoottikku from Kangaroo, and songs from 2 Harihar Nagar (Ekantha Chandrike and Adavukal Pathinettum), all of which continue to enjoy immense popularity among fans.
Born on 25 May 1957, M.G. Sreekumar hails from a family steeped in music. He is the son of Malabar Gopalan Nair, a noted musician, and Kamalakshi Amma, also a famed artist. His elder brother, the late M.G. Radhakrishnan, was a celebrated music director, and his sister, Dr. Omanakutty, is a respected musicologist and vocalist.
Sreekumar made his debut in playback singing with the 1983 film Coolie(Malayalam film). Over the decades, he has lent his voice to over 2,000 songs across Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, and Telugu cinema, earning immense acclaim for his versatile and emotionally charged renditions.
In addition to singing, Sreekumar has composed music for around 12 films, including Chathurangam, Thandavam, Arabiyum Ottakavum P. Madhavan Nairum, Ardhanaari, Njanum Ente Familyum, Husbands in Goa, and Sakudumbam Shyamala.
His contribution to Indian music has been recognised with two National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and three Kerala State Film Awards, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest voices in South Indian cinema.
