As Bollywood continues to revisit and reimagine iconic films, one question has been on every '90s kid's mind—will there be a sequel to the timeless romance, 'Maine Pyaar Kiya'? In an exclusive chat with Mathrubhumi, Bhagyashree, the actress who captured hearts as Suman, opens up about the possibility of revisiting her iconic character.

With nostalgia running high, Bhagyashree shares her thoughts on reprising her role, the love that the film continues to receive over the decades, and if a potential sequel is in the making.

Given the enduring success of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ over decades, how does it feel when you look back at it?

In one word, blessed! I think someone up there really loves me, and all of my fans also really love me. It was a love story that was so simply told—something that all of us look for in our day-to-day lives. We are all looking for simple partners and a simple life. Bolte hai na ki khushi jiska koi andaza nahi laga sakta.. naaptol kar koi khushi nahi hoti hai… It’s that kind of absolute simplicity that we lack in today’s time. The relatability that people saw in Suman and Prem’s story went on to every person at that time, as well as today. A lot of young people today look upon love stories of that time. That is what really stole people’s hearts or made ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ remain in people's hearts because we are seeking such kind of love. I would like to thank everyone on the team of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ for being able to make something like this. Everyone can relate to it—whether it’s Salman Khan’s character, my character', or Reema Lagoo’s character. Everyone is attached to the film in some way or another.

Will there be a sequel to ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’?

You tell me, do you all want a sequel? I think that’s going to be very difficult because society has changed since then.

But there are standalone sequels that are coming up even after decades.

That generation and the thought process were completely different; I don’t think it will work in today’s time. Today’s generation wants fast-forward things. They don’t want lectures or advice; they just want instant noodles being served to them. They don't want a message in a film's story, which was there in ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ through the dialogues of our senior actors, whether it was Suman saying something to Prem or something like cigarette smoking is injurious to health. At that time, everyone was like, "OMG!" Everyone would tell their boyfriends in the same manner like Suman did to Prem, and people would actually quit it. Today, it’s not possible. I feel those kinds of films are difficult and should be left like that.

Can’t there be a modern-day reboot of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’?

It’s not like I didn’t ask Sooraj (Barjatya) Ji, but I don’t think he could actually conceive something like that in today’s generation. You need a younger director to probably have the old family values. The day we get such a combination, I think people will try and make it. Maybe it won’t be named ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya 2’ and could be named something else, but somewhere, the audience will see hints of ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’ in it.
