The life of a Bollywood star may look glamorous from the outside, but behind the lights and fame often lie chapters that leave permanent scars. Decades ago, when actors did not have PR managers or carefully crafted images, even a single misstep could ruin an entire career. One such story belongs to a celebrated actress of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, whose career came crashing down after a shocking courtroom incident in 1978.

She had worked with some of the biggest names of Indian cinema, including Guru Dutt, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, and Manoj Kumar, and was even the star of Yash Chopra’s debut film. Known for her expressive eyes and memorable songs, she was among the most popular actresses of her era. But her life took a devastating turn when she was forced to make an admission in court that tarnished her reputation forever.

According to her close friend Tabassum, the actress once shared what she described as “the most difficult phase of her life.” During the peak of her stardom, she admitted to having both white and black income. In 1978, income tax officials raided her home and seized ₹12 lakh that her father had hidden. Desperate to get the money back, her father filed a case. Lawyers, however, told the family that the only way to reclaim it was for the actress to appear in court and admit that her earnings came from “other means” beyond films.

Although this was untrue, she was left with no choice. “I said this in court and I got my ₹12 lakh back, but I will always regret that I admitted to something I never did,” she later recalled.

The incident left her shattered, and her film career never recovered. What could have been a continued journey of stardom was instead overshadowed by a scandal that was never truly hers.
