Thiruvananthapuram: Renowned short story writer Francis Norohna said that there are certain group of people who are marginalized and underrepresented in the mainstream writing. He was talking on the topic 'Puthu kadhayile naattubhasha' (Use of local language in new stories) at Mathrubhumi International Festival of Letters (MBIFL) at Kanakakkunnu Palace on Saturday. He took the instance of fishermen who language was ignored in literature and tagged it as ‘bad’. He opined that alienating a special culture and its language is not the right way. Young author PV Shajikumar said that each writer is communicatin his own politics and is creating an alternative history by writing in local language.
Writer Ambikasuthan Mangad mentioned that writing in local language not only beautifies the content, but also helps to retain the identity which was lost due to globalization. Every story demands a specific scenario and language through which the story has to be unfolded. He added that the language which was formed in a male dominant culture is against the marginalized groups and women.
Poet Anto Sabin Joseph pointed out that, local words will enrich a language and will allow the writer to convey things in a simple way. While concluding the session, Ambikasuthan said that they write in the language of a specific village. He added that a writer can unfold a myth only when he uses the local language of the area where the myth has originated. He said that his story ‘Paana’ has also used local language.
