Alappuzha: Tourists in Kerala have a new reason to explore the backwaters. The Kerala State Water Transport Department’s new package tourism initiative, ‘Kuttanad Safari’, is set to begin its first journey on April 10, offering a full-day scenic and cultural experience across Alappuzha’s iconic waterways.

The journey departs from Alappuzha boat jetty at 10 am and returns at 5.30 pm. Passengers will travel aboard the cooled solar-powered double-decker boat ‘Indra’, which can accommodate up to 100 people at a time.

The project is being run in partnership with the Muhamma Grama Panchayat and sponsored by the Indian Oil Corporation.

What passengers can expect

  • Morning Breakfast: Freshly prepared at Azhikkal canal before departure
  • C Block Visit: Get up close with traditional Chundan vallam (snake boats)
  • Lunch: Served at a toddy shop en route to R Block
  • Cultural Experience: Traditional art performances on Pathiramanal Island, presented by Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA)
  • Local Shopping: Small boats offering essential and souvenir items

The project also seeks to boost package tourism in Kuttanad by linking tours with KSRTC services, making it easier for visitors to plan a full-day trip without hassles.

Bookings for the Kuttanad Safari will open on Tuesday, April 7 at 10 am. Interested tourists can reserve their spot by calling at 9400050333.
