Kolkata: Kolkata’s beloved Kathi Roll has once again brought global glory to India’s street food scene, earning the sixth spot in TasteAtlas’s latest ranking of the world’s best wraps.

The global list, topped by Greece’s Gyros and South Korea’s Sangchu Ssam, celebrates the planet’s most flavourful and portable meals.

Born in the 1930s at Nizam’s Restaurant, the Kathi Roll was invented as a quick, on-the-go meal by wrapping smoky kebabs in a flaky paratha.

The term ‘kathi’, meaning ‘stick’ in Bengali, refers to the bamboo skewers that replaced the heavy iron rods once used for grilling.

Over the decades, the roll has evolved into a versatile street food favourite — now available with fillings ranging from spiced chicken and egg to paneer and vegetables — making it an icon of Kolkata’s culinary heritage.

Interestingly, the Chicken Kathi Roll also received a separate mention in TasteAtlas’s extended Top 20 list, highlighting its continued global appeal.

According to TasteAtlas, other top wraps include Türkiye’s Tantuni, Mexico’s Enchiladas Suizas, and the Carne Asada Burrito from the United States.

The food curation platform, known for spotlighting traditional dishes worldwide, also recently featured Murgh Makhani (rank 29) and Hyderabadi Biryani (rank 31) in its Best Food in the World list — reaffirming India’s place on the global culinary map.
