At the Reliance AGM, Nita Ambani graced Indian craftsmanship in a hand-embroidered antique mauve Chikankari saree from Swadesh, painstakingly crafted over a year by Lucknow artisan Anjani Kashyap.

There are sarees that make an impression. Then there are sarees that tell a story before a single word is spoken.
At the Reliance Annual General Meeting, Nita Ambani arrived wrapped in one such narrative. Her choice for the event was a hand-embroidered Chikankari saree from Swadesh, rendered in a muted antique mauve that seemed to carry the softness of old heirlooms and the quiet confidence of modern elegance.
The colour itself felt deliberate. Neither pastel nor jewel-toned, the antique mauve chiffon possessed a rare restraint. It did not demand attention. It invited a second look. Against the fluid transparency of the fabric, intricate floral jaals unfolded like poetry written in thread, creating an interplay of light, shadow, and texture that revealed itself gradually.
What elevated the ensemble beyond beauty was the extraordinary labour hidden within its folds.
Handcrafted over the course of an entire year by Lucknow-based master artisan Anjani Kashyap, the saree stands as a testament to one of India’s most treasured embroidery traditions. Every motif bears the unmistakable signature of authentic Chikankari, an art form whose elegance lies in its precision rather than ornamentation. The craftsmanship draws from a repertoire of time-honoured techniques including Do Taar Chikankari, delicate Jaali work that mimics the intricacy of lace, Murri stitches resembling tiny grains of rice, Ghaas Patti motifs inspired by blades of grass, and the luminous detailing of Balda work.
Together, these techniques transform fabric into something almost ethereal. The pallu, richly articulated yet remarkably light, becomes a canvas where generations of knowledge converge. Nothing appears excessive. Every stitch serves a purpose. Every detail rewards patience.
The look was complemented by a custom organza and lace blouse by designer Manish Malhotra. Its pleated texture introduced a contemporary dimension to the ensemble, creating a subtle dialogue between traditional handcraft and modern couture. The pairing felt seamless, allowing the saree's artistry to remain the focal point while adding a layer of sophistication that suited the occasion.
For years, Nita Ambani's wardrobe choices have reflected a deep engagement with India's textile heritage, but this appearance carried a significance that extended beyond fashion.
