Why is the government pushing PNG?
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has asked households to switch to PNG where available, citing supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict. PNG is seen as a more stable and continuous fuel source compared to LPG cylinders.
What does the new rule say?
According to the latest directive, once a household is informed about PNG availability, it must switch within three months. After that, LPG supply to that address may be stopped, making the transition effectively mandatory in covered areas.
How to apply for a PNG connection
1. Online method
Visit the official website of your local gas provider, such as Indraprastha Gas Limited, fill out the new connection form, and submit the required details.
2. Mobile app
Many gas companies now offer mobile apps where users can register, upload documents, and track application status. You can also call providers like Adani Total Gas to register your request and get guidance on the process.
3. Offline method
Visit the nearest office of your city gas distributor, submit documents, and complete the application form in person. In many residential complexes, RWAs or builders coordinate with gas companies, making it easier for residents to get connections collectively.
PNG is supplied directly through pipelines, eliminating the need for cylinders. It mainly consists of methane, making it a cleaner fuel. It is also considered safer, as it disperses quickly in case of leakage.
How PNG is supplied
Natural gas is extracted from underground fields or imported as LNG, processed to remove impurities, and then transported through high-pressure pipelines. It is finally delivered to homes via a city gas distribution network.
As India looks to secure its energy needs, PNG is becoming a key alternative to LPG. With the government pushing for a transition, understanding how to apply early can help households avoid disruption and switch smoothly.
