The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has introduced SwaRail, a newly launched mobile app designed to streamline train travel-related services for passengers across India.

Currently in early access mode, the app is available for both Android and iOS users and was developed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS).

Described as a “super app”, SwaRail aims to consolidate multiple passenger services into one platform. It supports booking for both reserved and unreserved tickets, offers real-time train tracking, PNR status checks, coach position finding, platform ticket purchases, and even onboard food ordering.

Key features of the SwaRail app

According to IRCTC, the app offers the following functionalities:

  • Train booking (reserved, unreserved, and platform tickets)
  • Journey planner to search trains by source, destination, date, class, and quota
  • Real-time train tracking with updates on delays and arrivals
  • Coach position finder for easier boarding
  • Food ordering from partner vendors
  • Rail Madad support for raising and tracking complaints
  • Multilingual support
  • R-Wallet integration for cashless payments
  • My Bookings section to manage and view past and current ticket details
  • Profile management including account edits, biometric settings, and email verification
  • Refund requests for cancelled or missed journeys

Step-by-step guide to booking a ticket via SwaRail

  1. Download and login: Install the app and log in using your existing IRCTC credentials. New users must register.
  2. Journey planning: Navigate to the 'Journey Planner' and choose from 'Reserved', 'Unreserved', or 'Platform'.
  3. Input details: Enter source and destination stations, travel date, coach class, and ticket quota, then tap 'Search'.
  4. Select train and class: Choose the preferred train from the results and class of travel.
  5. Add passenger details: Select or enter passenger info, contact details, and optionally a GST number.
  6. Review and payment: Confirm all details, view fare breakdown if needed, complete captcha, and proceed to payment using UPI, cards, net banking or R-Wallet. A convenience fee is applicable: ₹23.6 for UPI, ₹35.4 for other methods.

The old IRCTC app remains functional, but SwaRail is expected to gradually become the primary app for railway services as more features roll out and early access transitions into a full release.
