Officials say the move will streamline the booking process and deter fraudulent activity, creating a fairer and more secure system for all passengers

Indian Railways has introduced mandatory Aadhaar verification for passengers booking Tatkal tickets through the IRCTC platform, effective from 1 July. The update is part of the railway's broader modernisation efforts and is aimed at ensuring genuine access to the high-demand Tatkal quota, which is often used by last-minute travellers. Officials say the move will streamline the booking process and deter fraudulent activity, creating a fairer and more secure system for all passengers.
Under the new policy, passengers booking Tatkal tickets online via the IRCTC website or app must first complete Aadhaar verification. If a user’s Aadhaar number is not already linked to their IRCTC account, they are required to follow these steps:
- Log in to your IRCTC account on the official website.
- Navigate to the “Profile” tab and select the “Link Aadhaar” option.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and your name exactly as it appears on your Aadhaar card
- Authenticate the information by entering the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-registered mobile number.
According to sources, Tatkal tickets purchased at computerised Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters or via authorised agents will now need OTP verification sent to the mobile number shared by the passenger during booking.
