A GST Number (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number or GSTIN) is a unique 15-digit alphanumeric code assigned to businesses registered under India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) system. It is mandatory for businesses whose turnover exceeds the prescribed threshold or who voluntarily opt for GST registration.

To get a GST (Goods and Services Tax) number in India, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check eligibility

  • GST registration is mandatory for businesses with an annual turnover above ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for service providers).
  • It is also mandatory for e-commerce sellers, interstate suppliers, and specific businesses like exporters.

Step 2: Gather required documents

You will need:

  • PAN card of the business or individual.
  • Aadhaar Card of the owner or partners.
  • Business Address Proof (Electricity Bill, Rent Agreement, NOC).
  • Bank Account Details (Cancelled check, bank statement, or passbook).
  • Business Registration Proof (Partnership deed, incorporation certificate, etc.).
  • Photographs of the owner or authorised individual company partnership signatory.

Step 3: Register online on the GST portal

  • Go to the GST portal: https://www.gst.gov.in
  • Click on service—Registration
  • Select "New Registration" and fill in the details- Type of taxpayer (individual, company, partnership, etc.), State and district, PAN, mobile number, and email
  • You will receive an OTP for verification.

Step 4: Complete the application (Part-B)

  • Enter business details, proprietor/partner details, and address.
  • Upload scanned copies of the required documents.
  • Add bank details and business activity information.
  • Choose Authorised Signatory and digitally sign using DSC or Aadhaar OTP.
  • GST registration is completely free if you do it yourself on the government's GST portal. 

Step 5: Submit and receive ARN

  • After submission, you will get an Application Reference Number (ARN) via SMS and email.
  • You can track the application using this ARN on the GST portal.

Step 6: Verification & GST number issuence

  • The GST department will verify your application.
  • If everything is correct, you will receive the GSTIN (GST Identification Number) within 3–7 working days.

Step 7: Download the GST certificate

  • Once approved, log in to the GST portal and download the GST Registration Certificate.

After registration, you can start filing GST returns and comply with GST regulations.
