Loneliness isn’t just emotional but could be deadly. A global study of over 15 lakh cancer patients finds that isolation raises cancer mortality risk by 11%.

New Delhi: Loneliness and social isolation may significantly increase the risk of death from cancer and other causes among patients with the disease, according to a new study.
The pooled analysis of 13 studies, involving more than 1.5 million patients, was led by researchers from the University of Toronto in Canada. The findings revealed that loneliness is relatively common among people living with cancer and can have a measurable impact on survival outcomes.
The study, published in the journal BMJ Oncology, reported data from over 2.1 million patients across nine studies. After adjusting for smaller sample sizes, the analysis showed that loneliness was linked to an 11 per cent higher risk of death from cancer.
“These findings collectively suggest that loneliness and social isolation may influence cancer outcomes beyond traditional biological and treatment-related factors,” the researchers said.
The team noted that the effects of loneliness may stem from a combination of biological, psychological and behavioural factors. Biologically, loneliness triggers a stress response that can disrupt the immune system and increase inflammation, potentially worsening disease progression.
Patients with cancer also face emotional and social challenges that contribute to isolation, including stigma, visible treatment side effects, and fears that loved ones may not fully understand their experience.
Additionally, cancer treatments can cause physical fatigue and cognitive changes that limit social interaction, while prolonged medicalisation can erode one’s sense of identity and community connection.
The researchers said that if these findings are confirmed through further studies, it would underline the need for routine psychosocial assessments and targeted mental health interventions in cancer care to help improve patient outcomes.
