Mumbai: On World Heart Day, doctors are busting one of the biggest myths surrounding heart health — that moderate alcohol consumption may be good for the heart.

Cardiologists say this belief is misleading and dangerous. Scientific evidence has now established that alcohol, in any amount, can damage the cardiovascular system.

“Alcohol raises blood pressure, weakens the heart muscle, and can trigger irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation that can put the heart in danger. Even small amounts increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and cardiomyopathy.

The so-called ‘protective effect’ of red wine has been disproved by many studies. Hence, it is proven that alcohol can do more harm than good,” said Dr Abhilash Mishra, Cardiologist, Zynova Shalby Hospital, Mumbai.

Doctors warn that alcohol is particularly harmful for people already living with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or high cholesterol, as it exerts extra pressure on the cardiovascular system.

For pregnant women, alcohol can pose severe risks to both mother and baby. Constant consumption also leads to weight gain, obesity, and liver damage — all of which further elevate the risk of heart disease and premature mortality.

On this World Heart Day, experts are urging people to take a decisive step toward better health. The message is clear: there is no safe level of alcohol consumption for the heart.

Quitting alcohol completely remains the best choice to protect cardiovascular and overall health.
