The woman had been living with the tumour for nearly 15 years. The mass extended from the suprapubic area to the diaphragm, causing severe pain and anaemia that restricted her mobility

New Delhi: A team of surgeons at a Gurugram hospital has successfully removed a massive abdominal tumour weighing around 10 kilograms from a 39-year-old woman from Jammu and Kashmir, in what doctors described as a high-risk and complex procedure.
The woman had been living with the tumour for nearly 15 years. The mass extended from the suprapubic area to the diaphragm, causing severe pain and anaemia that restricted her mobility. Her haemoglobin level had fallen to a critically low 4.5 gm/dl, the hospital said in a statement.
Despite consulting multiple doctors and undergoing treatments, including uterine artery embolisation at a reputed hospital in 2022, her condition continued to worsen.
She was eventually brought to the Gynecologic Oncology Outpatient Department at Artemis Hospital, where she was provided urgent supportive care and a haematology assessment. Over the next month, doctors worked to improve her haemoglobin levels and overall health to prepare her for surgery.
The operation was carried out on September 25 by the hospital’s surgical team, with support from the anaesthesia department led by Dr Rajesh Misra, Chairperson – Anaesthesia, Artemis Hospital. The tumour, measuring nearly 40 cm at its widest point, was compressing major blood vessels such as the inferior vena cava and the aorta, making the procedure particularly risky, the statement said.
During the surgery, two units of blood were transfused, and the patient remained stable throughout. She is currently recovering in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition.
"Large abdominal tumours of this size pose numerous challenges. The long-term pressure on major blood vessels and nearby organs needs careful planning and coordination between different specialities. This case shows how important it is to diagnose and treat problems early to stop such extreme growth," said Dr Rupinder Sekhon, Chairperson, Gynae Oncology at Artemis Hospital.
The hospital said the patient is recovering well after the operation.
