Most of us face hair loss at some point and this can be due to many reasons. If diagnosed and treated properly, this condition can often be resolved.

Understanding the reason of hair loss:

In some people, hair loss can occur suddenly. Over the course of three months, a significant amount of hair may fall out. Infections such as those caused by dengue fever or COVID-19 are key reasons for this. It can also occur after surgery or childbirth. Hair loss is commonly observed in chemotherapy patients as well.

Gradual hair loss is another common type. A deficiency of essential nutrients like iron, protein, zinc, manganese, selenium, and copper, which are vital for hair growth, can be a major factor.

Hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, PCOS, insomnia, or the use of some medicines can also lead to hair loss.

Another issue is thinning hair. This is a concern for both men and women. In men, this often starts with balding at the crown or forehead. Gradual hair loss in men is often influenced by hereditary factors.

What is Dandruff?

Dandruff is a condition affecting the scalp. It does not directly harm the hair or its roots. However, untreated dandruff can lead to secondary infections and hair loss.

Sebaceous glands in the scalp produce sebum (oil), which can easily trigger dandruff. Treatment for dandruff often takes time. Shampoos containing antifungal agents like ketoconazole, sertaconazole, and zinc pyrithione are commonly prescribed. Shampoos, gels, or oils containing these ingredients may be needed. In severe conditions, such as psoriasis, shampoos with coal tar may also be recommended.

Does biotin help hair growth?

Biotin is considered one of the best remedies to promote hair growth. Many people consume biotin supplements, such as gummies and bars, without consulting a doctor. However, biotin is only effective for individuals with a biotin deficiency. It is not guaranteed to promote hair growth for everyone.

Is oiling hair beneficial?

Traditionally, Malayalis apply oil to their hair before bathing. While this is beneficial in moderation, overusing hair oil is not recommended, especially for those with dandruff. For others, a small amount of oil can be used after warming it slightly, followed by shampooing; this can improve scalp health.

Tips for healthy hair:

  • Comb your hair only after it has dried to prevent breakage.
  • Always comb your hair in its natural growth direction.
  • Frequent oil massages can enhance blood circulation.
  • Wear a cotton cloth under your helmet to protect your hair.
  • For normal hair, shampooing once a week is sufficient.
  • Use natural alternatives like hibiscus shampoo, green gram powder, or urad dal powder to remove excess oil.
  • Avoid letting hair gels come into direct contact with the scalp.
  • Understand your hair type before opting for hair colouring.
  • If you have weak hair, avoid hair smoothing treatments.
  • At least six hours of sleep is necessary daily for healthy hair.
