From the streets of Amritsar to some of the biggest culinary stages in the world, chef Vikas Khanna has added another major achievement to his journey. The celebrated chef and restaurateur has become the first Indian in New York State history to receive a special honour during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month for his contributions to food, culture and the arts.

Last week, Kathy Hochul presented Khanna with a “Special Citation” during an AAPI Heritage Month event held in Albany, the capital of New York.

Sharing the moment on social media, Khanna described the recognition as “deeply emotional and humbling”.

He also pointed out that it was the first time an Indian had received the honour in New York State, making the moment even more meaningful for him.

“AAPI is the fastest-growing community in the United States,” Khanna wrote, adding that the community represents millions of stories, cultures, struggles and dreams.

“This was never just a personal milestone. It was a statement of hope, identity, representation, and the power of diversity,” he said.

More than just food

Speaking at the event on May 9, Khanna reflected on what the recognition meant beyond his personal success.

“To bring an Indian chef to this table, this is not just an honour for me, it’s a representation that our stories matter, our culture matters,” he said.

The chef also spoke about immigrants and the role they play in shaping cities like New York City.

He said the city continues to stand out because it protects vulnerable communities, especially immigrants who often face the greatest challenges while building a life in a new country.

A journey from Amritsar to global recognition

The citation described Khanna as a “global culinary icon” and praised his dedication to artistic and culinary excellence.

New York officials also highlighted the contributions of AAPI communities across the state during the celebrations.

Sibu Nair, the state’s AAPI Affairs Director, said the event recognised the impact these communities make every day across New York.

Another big moment for Vikas Khanna

The honour comes shortly after another major international recognition for the chef.

Last month, TIME magazine included Khanna in its 2026 list of the “100 Most Influential People” in the world.

The magazine described him as “a man of extraordinary heart”.

In the profile, award-winning chef Eric Ripert praised Khanna for using food as a way to connect people from different cultures and backgrounds.

TIME also noted that Khanna continues to carry Indian culture with pride while making its traditions relatable and accessible to people around the world.
