Lucknow: Lucknow has officially been designated a UNESCO 'Creative City of Gastronomy' during the 43rd Session of the UNESCO General Conference, currently underway in Uzbekistan, according to reports.

The global recognition celebrates the city’s centuries-old Awadhi cuisine, living food traditions, and inclusive cultural heritage. The Uttar Pradesh government said the milestone places the State among the world’s leading gastronomic destinations, showcasing how food heritage can serve as a powerful tool for cultural diplomacy and sustainable tourism.

Expressing his delight, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited people from around the world to visit Lucknow and experience its unique charm. "Lucknow is synonymous with a vibrant culture, at the core of which is a great culinary culture. I am glad that UNESCO has recognised this aspect of Lucknow, and I call upon people from around the world to visit Lucknow and discover its uniqueness,” the Prime Minister posted on X.

Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the recognition not only honours Lucknow’s culinary legacy but also reinforces Uttar Pradesh’s growing prominence in India’s development journey.

“Lucknow has been designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, a recognition of its distinguished culinary heritage and invaluable contribution to India’s rich gastronomic traditions. This honour enhances Lucknow’s global stature, positioning it as a premier destination for food and culture, and opens new avenues for tourism promotion, culture-led economic growth, heritage conservation, and international collaboration through the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.
