Discover how Japan`s innovative vending machines provide free food, water, and essentials during earthquakes and other natural disasters

Japan: When it comes to technology and creativity, Japan has long been a global leader. From high-speed trains to futuristic innovations, the country consistently finds new ways to make daily life safer and easier. Given its vulnerability to earthquakes and tsunamis, Japan has now introduced vending machines that can automatically provide free food, water and essential supplies during disasters.
In the coastal city of Ako, Hyogo Prefecture, special disaster-preparedness vending machines have been installed. According to a report by NDTV, each machine holds about 300 bottles and cans of drinks along with 150 emergency items such as ready-to-eat meals, portable toilets, masks and nutritional supplements.
How they work
When an earthquake or natural disaster occurs, sensors in the machine detect the event. The machine then automatically unlocks its doors, allowing free access to supplies. The system activates when the tremor reaches level 5 or higher on Japan’s seismic intensity scale. At all other times, the machines function normally and items must be purchased. The project is a collaboration between the municipality and Earth Corp., a Tokyo-based pharmaceutical company.
These machines are strategically placed near designated evacuation shelters to ensure quick relief for residents during emergencies.
Beyond food and drink
Japan is home to one of the world’s highest concentrations of vending machines, offering everything from hot coffee to unusual items like whale or bear meat. In the past, Tokyo even installed a vending machine with a built-in radio that automatically turned on during strong earthquakes, broadcasting emergency instructions from a local community station.
Many modern vending machines go far beyond soft drinks and snacks. Some serve hot meals such as soba noodles, fried rice and curry, thanks to integrated heating and refrigeration systems. Others are equipped with cup noodles and hot water dispensers, complete with utensils.
For those with a sweet tooth, machines stocked with jarred cakes, mochi, canned bread and ice cream cater to dessert cravings. Coffee, tea and even hot canned soup are also commonly available.
From emergency preparedness to everyday convenience, Japan’s vending machines continue to redefine how technology can meet people’s needs, in both ordinary and extraordinary times.
