Vega, an initiative of the Water Transport Department , shows phenomenal growth, as the boat service has collected  Rs.7 crores within 4 years, opening up the doors of possibilities in tourism sector.

It was on March 10, 2020 that, the department had introduced Vega with an initial investment of Rs. 1.90 crores. An instant hit, the tourist boat service had returned the investment and started netting profits for the department within one and a half year. The idea behind the introduction of the boat service was to tour through the Vembanad Lake on a small budget.

A 5-hour ride would cost Rs. 600 for AC and Rs. 400 for non-AC along with a local guide. The ride spans the Vembanad Lake, the venue for the Nehru Trophy boat race, Muhamma, Pathiramanal, Kumarakom, R Block, Marthandam, Chithira, C Block, and Kuppapuram. A  30-minute break at Pathiramanal, sightseeing at Kuttanad's fields and coconut groves would give the tourist a much needed excitement which would culminate with a mouth-watering lunch from Kudumbashree .

For a 50 km long ride, Vega has 40 AC seats and 80 non-AC seats. For pre-bookings, contact 9400050325 or 9400050326. The trip starts at 11 am from Alappuzha Boat Jetty and ends at 5 pm.

Initial services of Vega saw rides that were summoned under the leadership of the director of the Water Transport Department, Shaji V. Nair. Present day, Vega runs fully booked with recommendations from the Secretariat and offices of ministers. Bookings from pensioners, Kudumbashree, college, and school associations have increased Vega's demand. The daily collection comes around Rs. 56000/-. Setting aside the employee salary of Rs. 5000/-  and diesel needs, the rest is profit.
