Stringent restrictions on beach access and sea bathing have significantly impacted Kerala's tourism sector. The tourism industry in Kovalam and Varkala has been suffering for two months, grappling with the adverse effects of these restrictions imposed during the monsoon season due to the increasing occurrences of the Kallakadal (rough sea) phenomenon.

Hotel and restaurant owners report a steep decline in business, with many visitors opting to leave Kovalam for other destinations. This downturn in tourism has also adversely affected local vendors, from street hawkers to hotel owners. Even those providing umbrellas and sunbeds for visitors to bask on the beach have experienced a dip in business. Currently, the beaches are only frequented by locals.

Surfing and sea bathing were key attractions for tourists visiting Kovalam; however, due to frequent strong waves, the coastlines have eroded, making it unsafe.

A few months ago, foreign and domestic tourists visiting Kovalam's Lighthouse and Hawa Beach were trapped by rough seas. They were rescued by lifeguards. Soon after, officials from the tourism department declared that the restrictions would continue to prevent such incidents from happening again.

To ensure tourists do not enter the beach, the tourism authorities have enforced strict measures. Lifeguards have been ordered to prevent beach and sea entry, ropes have been installed to limit access, and warning flags and danger zone signs have been displayed.

These restrictions were imposed by the Tourism Department in response to directives from the National Disaster Management Authority on 31 May after multiple incidents were reported.

Speaking on the matter, Kovalam Tourism Information Officer S. Sajeev told Mathrubhumi that no information had been received from officials yet to revoke the restrictions.
