Kerala's first peafowl sanctuary, popularly known as Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary (Mayiladumpara), will open for trekking from the first week of June. Visitors can enjoy the beauty of the sanctuary, which spans eight kilometres.
According to estimates, more than five hundred peafowls have been residing here for the past two years. The sanctuary is open to visitors from 8 am to 5 pm, offering the chance to enjoy a variety of birds and butterflies in addition to trekking.
The Forest Department offers four trekking packages: Chilampathodi, Anadiyanpara, Watchtower, and Ayakkurussi. Visitors can choose their package based on their preferences.
- Chilampathodi: Six people can trek two kilometres in two hours for Rs. 600.
- Anadiyanpara: Three people can trek four kilometres in three hours for Rs. 900.
- Watchtower: Three people can trek five kilometres in four hours for Rs. 1,200.
- Ayakkurussi: Three people can trek eight kilometres in six hours for Rs. 1,800.
A forest watcher will accompany visitors. Upon reaching the main centres, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Peringottukurissi and Kuthannoor areas, as well as the Chelakkara and Pazhayannur areas from a height. They can also see muniyara (Megalithic Age burial chambers), check dams, and huge rocks.
Chulanur Peafowl Sanctuary was established in 1997 during the tenure of Binoy Viswam as Forest Minister. The sanctuary is located between the Thrissur and Palakkad districts, with 202 hectares in the Palakkad Alathur range and 140 hectares in Thrissur's Wadakanchery range.
