Renowned for its vibrant tourism, Goa is considering significant measures to address excessive tourist footfall. As one of India's most popular tourist destinations, Goa attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually, both local and foreign. Recently, the State has been grappling with challenges stemming from excessive tourism.

To tackle these issues, reports suggest Goa's local government is planning substantial changes for the upcoming season. One proposal is the introduction of a tourist tax at Calangute Beach in North Goa, a hotspot for tourists.

The Calangute Village Panchayat has proposed ticketing entry to the beach, particularly for those without prior hotel reservations in Goa. Drawing inspiration from Maharashtra's Mahabaleshwar, the Panchayat aims to impose a tourism fee similar to other popular destinations.

Recently, the Panchayat committee unanimously passed a resolution requesting the district collector, police chief, and government to implement this measure. They argue that the unchecked influx of tourists is causing environmental pollution, traffic congestion, and various public nuisances. The Panchayat has stressed the need for strict enforcement on all access roads to the village, targeting vehicles transporting tourists who do not adhere to proper guidelines.

Joseph Zakaria, the Sarpanch (head) of Calangute Panchayat, highlighted the challenges faced by locals due to tourists arriving without accommodation bookings. “Tourists who arrive in jeeps and buses sit on the beach and drink. They eat food in their vehicles and leave garbage in public places. They park their vehicles carelessly on the roadside and create blockages. None of these people come to Goa after booking hotels to stay. We demand that action be taken to control such behaviour,” he said.

According to them, the goal is to preserve the pristine beauty of Calangute Beach and introducing an entry tax is crucial to managing the influx of tourists and ensuring sustainable tourism. With plans to implement these changes by the start of the next tourist season in October, the Calangute Panchayat hopes to maintain the allure of the renowned beach destination while regulating tourist activities effectively.
