Living in a cosy studio or small apartment offers a dynamic environment for work and play throughout the day. However, transitioning to a peaceful sleep mode can pose a challenge when your space combines electronics, cooking, clothing, and books all in one.
Ensuring quality sleep is essential for overall health, “The primary rule, maybe the only rule of small space design, is people have to be honest about how they really live,” says Olivia Hosken, House Beautiful’s deputy managing editor. "When there’s limited square footage, there’s less allowance for things that don’t function optimally."
Andrea Morris from Lancaster Place Interiors suggests investing in a good bed or quality sleep sofa rather than bulky furniture that won’t be used regularly.
Murphy beds, which fold into the wall by day and provide a comfortable sleep surface by night, are favoured by Morris for maximising space efficiency. Some designs even integrate a sofa.
To carve out a distinct sleep area within your studio, consider using freestanding screens, room dividers, or hanging walls to create separation. “Avoid doing work or anything stressful from your bed,” says Jeff Kahn, co-founder of the Chicago-based sleep-research company Rise Science, which developed a sleep-tracking app, Rise. “This helps to maintain what sleep medicine practitioners call ‘stimulus control,’ which helps your brain associate the bed with sleep, rather than wakefulness and stress,” he says.
Maintain a dedicated sleep zone and avoid using it for other activities. Psychologist Lisa Strauss advises designating specific areas of the bed for reading and sleeping to reinforce this separation. Creating a soothing atmosphere conducive to sleep is also crucial. Mia Ingui, editor at Spruce, recommends using a diffuser with calming scents like lavender to promote relaxation.
Minimise exposure to artificial light from screens at night as it can disrupt your sleep cycle. Consider using blackout curtains and noise machines to block out disturbances from appliances or street noise. Choosing breathable bedding materials can help regulate temperature in your small space, ensuring comfort throughout the night.
By making thoughtful choices, even the smallest living spaces can embody the harmonious, calming, and sleep-friendly ambiance we all desire from home life.
