New Delhi: Are you struggling to maintain healthy blood sugar levels? A recent analysis of studies suggests that incorporating pulses such as beans, peas, lentils, and chickpeas into your diet can effectively manage diabetes. These findings, highlighted in a new review published on Friday, also indicate that pulses contribute positively to key cardiovascular markers, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels.
The review, based on an evaluation of 30 articles, underscores the growing body of evidence supporting the inclusion of pulses in future dietary guidelines. It emphasises the need for further research into optimising pulse consumption within balanced diets.
Key outcomes frequently assessed in the studies include changes in LDL and HDL cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar levels, haemoglobin A1c, waist circumference, and markers of inflammation such as C-reactive protein.
Published in the journal ‘Nutrients’, the review highlights that pulses are not only beneficial for blood sugar management but also for their nutritional profile. It points out the "potential role of pulses in maintaining health and preventing chronic disease", said Taylor C Wallace, Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at George Washington University, US.
It also plays a crucial role in "enhancing long-term health, particularly among individuals with chronic conditions like Type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease", Taylor added.
They are low in fat and rich in healthy mono- and polyunsaturated fats, essential micronutrients, and bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. These qualities contribute to pulses being recognized as a nutritional powerhouse.
Pulses are renowned for their high plant protein content, abundant fibre, folate, and potassium. They also provide essential minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium, and magnesium, making them invaluable in plant-based diets prioritising nutrient-rich foods.
