Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Health Minister Veena George has advised those who have previously been exposed to dengue fever to be extremely cautious, as their health condition may become complicated if they get infected again. Most people who contract dengue will have mild symptoms, but five percent are likely to experience severe symptoms. Therefore, it is considered that many people may have been infected with the dengue virus at least once without knowing it, the minister said.
There are four dengue virus (DENV) types: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The first encounter with any of these types will provide life-long immunity against that specific type. However, if the same person gets infected by a different type of dengue, the disease is likely to be severe. Therefore, the destruction of mosquito breeding sources is very important. The minister also requested that people with comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and kidney disease maintain extra vigilance. Similarly, the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with weak immunity should pay special attention.
Prevention and treatment are crucial to preventing severe dengue fever and deaths.
Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is spread by Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes breed in stagnant water. Dengue fever can only be transmitted from one person to another through mosquitoes. The travel distance of the Aedes mosquito is short. Therefore, keeping houses, establishments, and surroundings mosquito-free will help prevent dengue fever.
Do not discard items carelessly, as mosquitoes will lay eggs on anything that contains standing water. Public places should be kept clean. The minister said that local bodies and residents' associations should pay attention and observe dry days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Do not Forget the Warning Signs
Drink plenty of fluids even if you have a mild fever. Drinks are very helpful in relieving fatigue and preventing dehydration. Boiled rice water is best. Rest is very important. If you have a fever that lasts for more than three days or any other symptoms, you should seek professional treatment. Similarly, if you observe symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, prolonged vomiting, severe fatigue, red spots, or bleeding on the skin and gums, you should seek professional treatment as soon as possible.
Prevention is Key
Controlling disease-carrying mosquitoes is paramount. Keep homes, institutions, premises, and public places clean. All water storage tanks should be sealed. Items around the house that are prone to standing water, such as tins and cans, should be covered. Be careful to keep the person with dengue inside a mosquito net. Babies must be kept inside mosquito nets. Avoid sleeping in open areas. Wear clothes that cover your arms and legs well to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Mosquito repellents and topical ointments can provide some protection against mosquito bites. Closing windows and doors after fumigating the inside of the house during the morning and evening, when mosquitoes are most active, will help reduce the mosquito menace.
