New Delhi: The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has asked to remove drinks like Bournvita from the category of healthy drinks on online portals and other platforms.
After an investigation by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPR), it was found that these drinks are just flavoured water-based drinks and could not be defined as "health drinks" under the law.
The FSSAI also warned that using incorrect terms could mislead customers, so online shops were told to remove or fix any misleading advertisements. The commission also stated that the presence of sugar in Bournvita was found to be higher than the permissible amount.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights had earlier asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to take action against companies that failed to follow safety norms and guidelines.
The commission made it clear that, as there's no legal definition of 'health drinks', it's inappropriate to label beverages as such and sell products under the same label. The FSSAI had directed e-commerce portals against labelling drinks containing milk and malt as health drinks and energy drinks. It was also suggested that food products sold through these websites should be properly classified and labelled.
