Palakkad: Soon, a writers' village will be formed on the land where the classic literary piece in Malayalam 'Khasakkinte Ithihasam' by O V Vijayan was created.

The dream project will be realised in a 4-cent land at Thasrak in Kinassery here. The foundation stone will be laid at 4 pm on Wednesday.

The project worth Rs 5 crore is implemented under the leadership of State Department of Tourism. Though there are cottages for writers in many places, a village for the writers is a first of its kind initiative. The writers' village has been planned behind the 'Njattupura' where the novel was set and will be near the O V Vijayan Memorial in Thasrak.

There will be 8 cottages, each with an area of 500 square feet. The cottages will have a bedroom, kitchen, work area and facilities for writing. The writers can stay here along with their families and engage in writing. Apart from this, five huts that can accommodate 2 people each will be arranged on tree tops.

An office, reception and food court will be included in an administrative block adjacent to the village. A dormitory that can lodge 50 people will be arranged on its top floor of the administrative block, said K G Ajesh, secretary of District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). The village will be prepared with an open stage and lawn in order to attract tourists.

Minister Kadakampally Surendran will lay the foundation stone for the writers' village while minister A K Balan will lay the foundation stone for the cottages. OV Vijayan Memorial Committee president T K Narayana Das said that the concept of writers' village will introduce OV Vijayan and his works to more readers and also turn the memorial into a tourist destination.

There are plans to make this a favourite destination for literary enthusiasts and students. Also a project will be designed to make a tourism circuit that allows tourists to visit the Thunchath Ezhuthachan memorial in Chittur and the birth places of two Jnanpith laureates in Kudallur and Kumaranellur, said OV Vijayan Memorial Committee secretary T R Ajayan.
