Meaning
'Panglossian' refers to someone who holds the belief that everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds, regardless of the evidence or circumstances. In everyday usage, it implies an unrealistic or overly idealistic form of optimism.
Pronunciation
pan.glos.ee.uhn
Origin
The term originates from Dr Pangloss, a central character in Voltaire’s Candide. Dr. Pangloss is an overly optimistic teacher who repeatedly asserts that "all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds," even amidst disasters and suffering. His belief endures despite the increasingly absurd and tragic events happening around him. The word 'Panglossian' first appeared in the 1830s.
History
'Candide' is a philosophical satire in which Voltaire critiques Leibnizian optimism, developed by German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. According to Leibniz, the world we live in is the "best possible" because it was created by a benevolent God, even though suffering exists. Voltaire used Dr Pangloss to ridicule this philosophy, exaggerating his blind optimism in absurd situations.
As a result, 'Panglossian' became a term used to mock those who hold similarly naive and unfounded optimism, ignoring the harsh realities around them.
Example
A person who insists everything will work out perfectly despite all the negative news and obstacles, simply because 'it’s meant to be,' could be described as Panglossian.
