Thiruvananthapuram: Eminent writer N S Madhavan was honoured with Kerala's prestigious Ezhuthachan Puraskaram for 2024, in recognition of his contribution to Malayalam language and literature. The award was presented by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during a special ceremony on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram.

During the award ceremony, the Chief Minister praised Madhavan’s literary works, including renowned titles like Higuita, Thiruthu, Choolaimedile Savangal, Pancha Kanyakakal, and Lanthenbetheriyile Luthiniyakal. The CM also also acknowledged how these works have enriched Malayalam literature and emphasised their enduring value.

Government’s commitment to protecting Malayalam language

CM Pinarayi Vijayan also spoke about the Kerala government's ongoing efforts to preserve and promote the Malayalam language. He highlighted the introduction of the Malayalam Bill and stressed that while the government supports learning other languages like English, it should not come at the cost of diminishing Malayalam's prominence.He also added that Malayalam is already the language of government business in the state, and that the government is working towards ensuring it gains the same recognition in the courts with the support of the judiciary. "Efforts are on to make that a reality," he said.

N S Madhavan’s legacy, recognition

N S Madhavan, who was selected for the Ezhuthachan Award in November 2024, is not only known for his fiction but is also an active columnist in both English and Malayalam. He continues to be a prominent social commentator, contributing to discussions on various societal issues.

Named after Thunchaththu Ezhuthachan, the father of the Malayalam language, the Ezhuthachan Award includes a cash prize of Rs 5,00,000 and a citation.
