Kottarakkara (Kollam): Writer M T Vasudevan Nair declared that Perumkulam in Kulakkada panchayat in Kollam district is the first village of books in Kerala. With this, Perumkulam also owned the credit of being the second village of books in the country.
Perumkulam owned the title of village of books by making available books in all major centres in the village with the help of Bappuji Library here. Writer M Mukundan is the patron of the Bappuji Library. Book shelves were set up in 10 different locations under the leadership of the library. People can take books from the shelves for free and return after reading.
M T Vasudevan Nair declared Perumkulam as village of books via online on Reading Day which fell on Friday by 11 in the morning. The writer said that libraries played a key role in the development and renaissance of villages in the old times and the effort to promote reading through establishing book shelves for the public is a laudable act.
Ahead of the declaration, the library workers arranged books in all shelves in the village and opened them for the public. As the COVID threat still exists, sanitizers also are arranged in all shelves.
Bhilar - first village of books in India
Bhilar in Satara district of Maharashtra is the first village of books in India. They have opened small libraries and reading spots in 25 locations in the village. Both the locals and tourists can read books from here. The libraries are functioning with the help of government. They even conduct literature festivals and other events.
