Kottayam: The prices of yam and colocasia have soared past Rs 100 per kg to the surprise of the agricultural market. However, despite the high prices, local farmers are not benefiting from it as majority of these products come from neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Wildlife menace has hindered the proper cultivation of yam and colocasia in the State.

During the last Onam, yam was priced between Rs 50 and Rs 60 per kg, but it has now jumped to Rs 100. Traders cite a shortage of locally grown yam, and many farmers have abandoned yam cultivation due to ongoing wildlife issues, falling prices and a lack of market opportunities. Yam is usually in higher demand only during Onam season.

Seedling prices have also increased, with  yam seedlings costing over Rs 100 per kg. The price of a yam seedling, with an average weight of 5 kg, was approximately Rs 500.

Smaller yams from Tamil Nadu are currently available at higher prices. Colocasia, which was priced at Rs 80 two months ago, is now selling for Rs 120 per kg.

The prices have risen due to low availability, with current rates reaching Rs 90 to Rs 100 per kg of the crop.
