Kattappana (Idukki): The price of local turmeric (nadan manjal) in Kerala has soared in high-range markets due to a decrease in production. Previously priced between Rs 100 and Rs 140 per kilogram, dry turmeric is now fetching Rs 200 to Rs 240 as supplies reduce.
Raw turmeric has seen price rise from Rs 15 to Rs 25 per kilogram. Turmeric cultivation in the high ranges had declined sharply in 2019 when farmers shifted to more profitable cardamom cultivation amidst rising prices.

Farmers have been deterred from turmeric cultivation by its low prices in recent years and higher labour costs for drying the crop. This has led to a scarcity of high-quality turmeric in the high ranges, thus driving up its price.
Although a huge amount of turmeric reaches the high ranges from Tamil Nadu, traders note that it often lacks the quality and expenses of locally sourced turmeric. Mill owners in the region prioritise purchasing high-quality turmeric from local traders.
