Farmers resume strawberry cultivation with high-yield varieties, promising fresh harvests and better prices this season

Marayoor: Farmers in Kanthalloor are gearing up for a new strawberry season as the Agriculture Department and the State Horticulture Mission provide support for cultivation across the region. With the soil being prepared and high-yielding varieties introduced, about 30 acres are now set to benefit from the sweet fruits.
Farmers expressed relief that government agencies have come forward to support the new season. The introduction of hybrid saplings and other incentives encouraged farmers to return to strawberry cultivation after some had shifted to other crops in recent years.
Which varieties are being planted?
High-yielding strawberry varieties like Winter Dawn and Sweet Charlie, brought from Pune, have been distributed to farmers. These varieties are expected to revolutionise cultivation across the 30 acres now under preparation.
Strawberry cultivation in Kanthalloor began in the 2013-14 period, and farmers gradually adopted the crop as yields and market prices proved profitable. However, climate change and the discontinuation of government support had previously forced many to switch to other crops, including garlic. Now, renewed support has prompted farmers to return to strawberries.
How long will the harvest last and what are the expected prices?
The strawberry plants are expected to have a harvest period lasting seven months. Prices for the produce are projected to range from Rs 400 to Rs 600 per kg.
Who is leading the project?
The project is being implemented under the leadership of Kanthalloor Agriculture Officer Manoj Joseph, Assistant Agriculture Officer Anilkumar, Agriculture Assistant VK Jins, and SHM Field Assistant Abhilash Mohanan.
Farmers and the Agriculture Department are also working to expand cultivation to additional areas in the region.
