Ambalavayal in Wayanad has been named ‘Avocado City’ for leading in avocado cultivation and exports, offering new hope to farmers

Ambalavayal (Wayanad, Kerala): In a major recognition of its thriving avocado farming, Ambalavayal has officially been named the Avocado City. The announcement was made by Kerala Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, acknowledging the region's leadership in avocado cultivation and marketing.
Often referred to as butter fruit, avocado has emerged as a beacon of hope for farmers in the area. With minimal investment and high returns ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 per plant when cultivated scientifically, avocado farming has become a lifeline—particularly as other crops have failed. Every year, tonnes of avocados are exported from Ambalavayal, especially during June and July, further boosting its reputation as an agricultural hub.
Wayanad eyes avocado branding with new fair
Plans are now underway to develop Wayanad into a branded avocado-producing region, starting with the launch of the Avocado Fest. Ambalavayal Grama Panchayat Vice-President K. Shameer stated that the goal of the festival is to expand avocado cultivation, which is in high demand in metropolitan markets, thereby increasing farmers’ income.
Avocado Fest inspires farmers
The two-day Avocado Fest brought together around 500 farmers, reinvigorating interest and confidence in the crop. Experts conducted training sessions on the economic potential and scientific methods of avocado farming.
Organised jointly by the Ambalavayal Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Wayanad Hill Farmer Producer Company, and the Ambalavayal Grama Panchayat, the event saw participation from farmers across Kerala and beyond. Attendees explored opportunities in value-added avocado products, which they said could open up new markets and increase profitability.
Dr C. K. Yamini Varma, head of RARS, expressed joy at Ambalavayal being named Avocado City and assured that the required support would be provided to farmers going forward.
As part of the celebrations, Chiradeep was awarded a cash prize for being selected as the best farmer in the district. Competitions were also held for the best avocado and the best avocado-based recipe.
