What’s the connection between the Kozhikode Corporation and fish? If you think it’s simply because Kozhikode is a coastal city, that’s not the full picture. Kozhikode has chosen fish as its unique product under the 'One Local Government, One Product' (OLOP) scheme, a statewide initiative aimed at promoting native delicacies and products. In total, 456 local government bodies across Kerala have each selected a unique product to showcase their region’s specialties.

Similarly, jackfruit, tapioca and other items have been chosen by different regions as valuable products. The OLGP scheme was launched last year with the goal of identifying native products and creating a market for them. The scheme aims to provide fair prices for agricultural products and ensure substantial income for farmers and entrepreneurs through value-added products.

The Industries Department, through the Directorate of Industries and Commerce, will assist local governments in preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for OLGP. Each local government can receive up to Rs 50,000 in support.

In some districts, several panchayats have selected the same products. In such cases, joint ventures may be considered, as these panchayats have submitted their product choices to the Industries Department. The department will also provide necessary technical guidance for implementing the DPRs.

The Industries Department will support sales through e-commerce platforms and government fairs.
