Kochi: The price of pineapple has soared by Rs 24 per kg in the past ten days, reaching Rs 52, according to the numbers of the Vazhakulam Growers Association. Despite the increase, farmers continue to face challenges due to low production.

Since early June, pineapple prices were stable at Rs 28 per kg. However, due to severe summer heat and fluctuating rainfall, prices skyrocketed briefly to Rs 67 per kg before settling at the current rate.

The decrease in fruit production, especially of high-demand varieties like pineapple green (Rs 52) and special green (Rs 54), has been a significant factor behind the price surge. Many plants were affected by the intense heat, resulting in underdeveloped pineapples that couldn't meet market demands. Extended rainy periods reduced domestic market demand as well.

While exports of pineapple green and special green increased to compensate for high demand in other states during extreme heat, overall production shortages have posed challenges for exports. Farmers fear a 25% reduction in next season's yield due to this year's adverse weather conditions and shortages in planting materials caused by temperatures exceeding 35 degrees celsius.
