Thiruvananthapuram: The government has come up with a special program to improve the quality of school education as the target of making children learn letters and numbers at the primary level has been found to have failed. With this aim, the Education department has prepared guidelines for a three-year program named ‘Comprehensive quality education project’.

The aim is to ensure that all children in classes up to 7, acquire language and mathematical skills as envisaged  by the curriculum. Mentors are proposed to be appointed to support students and teachers at the school level.

In the first phase, it will be implemented on a pilot basis in selected schools for children belonging to Classes 1-4.  The scheme will be extended to classes 5-7 next year after considering the practicality in all schools up to class 4. The guideline also suggested that pre-schools may be introduced from the next academic year. Samagra Shiksha Keralam (SSK) is implementing the project through the Vidyakiranam mission.

Flaws in learning objectives led to:

  • No improvement in quality in National educational attainment survey 2021.
  • Children who are unable to acquire basic literacy and mathematical skills are most likely to experience socio-economic, health and emotional limitations.
  • Relegated from first to second rank in Performance Grade Index 2021-22 conducted by Union Ministry of Education.
  • The learning gaps during the Covid period have not been fully filled.

Implementation of new project includes

  • Academic master plan
  • School resource group
  • Special training for teachers
  • Three phase assessment in a year
  • Special awareness program for parents
  • Support facilities including possibilities for student performance
