Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's General Education Department will discuss measures to reduce the weight of school bags on November 24, with changes to textbook printing and distribution among the options being considered.

General Education Minister N Samsudheen announced the meeting on Monday while responding to a petition submitted by K K Valsaraj, who highlighted the difficulties high school students face due to heavy school bags. The petition was submitted on behalf of students from government schools in his constituency.

The minister said the issue was already under the department's consideration and had been discussed at an earlier meeting.

One proposal is to print textbooks with lessons arranged by month or half-year, allowing students to carry only the portions they need instead of entire textbooks. The department is also exploring the use of lighter paper to reduce the overall weight of books.

The November 24 meeting will examine these proposals and other possible alternatives to ease the burden on students.

No final decision has been announced, and the measures remain under consideration.
