Kannur: Kannur university has reconstituted their Board of Studies (BoS) for courses that have been transferred to other universities. Board of Studies related to the courses transferred to the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) and the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) were formed.
There are 14 BoS in Modern medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, health science, ayurveda and engineering. With the establishment of KUHS in 2010, all the medical and paramedical colleges that were under other universities came under its aegis. KTU came into existence in 2014. With that, the engineering courses were shifted as well. There are six BoS in Modern Medicine, two in Health Science and three in Ayurveda. One BoS each is there in Pharmacy, Dentistry and Engineering.
Kannur university clarified that these were reconstituted because a BoS is required to conduct supplementary examinations and grant equivalency certificates. Yet, supplementary examinations for many ‘transferred’ courses have not been conducted for years. It is alleged that the BoS is retained for this purpose while the responsibility of conducting the supplementary examination rests with the Examination board.
After the completion of the period of study of a course, the student can attempt supplementary examinations for an additional time period equivalent to that of the course. If the application is submitted even after the deadline, an opportunity is given to attempt the examination. It has been many years since the Modern Medicine courses have been shifted and yet the BoS has been formed in the name of conducting the exam without specifying a time limit within which this practice would end.
