The NTA is introducing mandatory live photo capture and Aadhaar-based e-KYC for JEE Main 2026 registrations.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has introduced digital reforms in the registration process for JEE Main 2026 that include a mandatory live photo feature and an Aadhaar-based e-KYC system. These innovations aim to enhance candidate verification, prevent impersonation, and streamline the application process.
Live Photo Feature
For the first time, candidates registering for JEE Main 2026 must capture a live photograph through their computer or mobile device camera during registration. This real-time photo is verified against the applicant's Aadhaar card photo stored in the UIDAI database. This automatic facial match serves as a dual authentication method, reducing identity fraud risks. In case of any mismatch between the live and Aadhaar photos, candidates are notified to update their details to ensure authenticity before submitting their application.
How this works
- Register on the official JEE Main portal and generate an application number.
- Log in to fill out the application form with personal and academic details.
- At the document upload stage, use your device webcam or mobile camera (via QR code) to capture a live photo.
- Confirm the live photo displayed on screen.
- The system verifies this photo by matching it with your Aadhaar card photo automatically.
- If any mismatch occurs, you’ll be asked to retake the photo or update details.
- Upload a recent scanned passport-size photograph as required.
e-KYC Verification System
The e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) verification system uses the candidate’s Aadhaar data with their consent to auto-fill and verify personal details such as name, date of birth, gender, and address during registration. This digital verification reduces manual errors and speeds up the approval process. Candidates without Aadhaar can still register by submitting valid identity proof and undergoing physical verification.
Additional Facilitations
To further support candidates, especially those with disabilities, NTA has incorporated assistive tools within the online exam interface, including enhanced magnification and a dark mode option. These measures promote inclusivity and provide a more comfortable exam experience.
Why These Changes Were Introduced
The changes were introduced to address issues of impersonation and identity fraud prevalent in competitive exams. By using Aadhaar's biometric verification combined with live photograph capture, NTA enhances exam integrity and transparency. The e-KYC system also simplifies registration, reducing errors and making the process faster and more secure.
