New Apple AirTag 2026 launched: What’s the difference and should you buy it?

# Tech Desk

Apple Inc. officially unveiled the second generation of its AirTag item tracker on Monday, introducing noteworthy internal hardware upgrades to its bestselling accessory while maintaining the original’s $29 price point.

The announcement marks the first major refresh for the AirTag since its debut in 2021. The new model, which retains the distinct coin-shaped design of its predecessor, focuses on three primary pillars: increased finding range, enhanced audio alerts, and bolstered privacy protections.

Internal Overhaul

While the exterior remains identical, the second-generation AirTag features a complete internal redesign.

  • Next-Gen Connectivity: The device is powered by a second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, the same found in the iPhone 17 and Apple Watch Ultra 3. This enables "Precision Finding" to work from up to 50 per cent farther away than the original model.
  • Louder Chime: Apple has upgraded the internal speaker, making it 50 per cent louder. The company claims the new chime can be heard from up to twice the distance, specifically designed to help users locate items buried deep in upholstery or luggage.
  • Wrist-Based Tracking: For the first time, users can utilise the Precision Finding interface directly on an Apple Watch (Series 9, Ultra 2, or later), allowing for directional tracking without needing to pull out an iPhone.

Privacy and Anti-Stalking

Addressing long-standing concerns regarding the misuse of trackers, Apple has introduced an anti-tampering speaker design. The new hardware makes it significantly more difficult for the speaker to be disabled or removed, a common tactic used in unwanted tracking.

Additionally, the device integrates with a new "Share Item Location" feature in iOS 26. This allows users to securely and temporarily share a tracker's live location with third parties, such as airline customer service teams, to assist in recovering lost bags. Apple confirmed partnerships with over 50 global airlines for this encrypted service.

Pricing and Availability

In a move welcomed by consumers, Apple has kept its pricing structure unchanged despite the hardware upgrades:

  • Single Pack: $29 (INR 3,790)
  • Four-Pack: $99 (INR 12,900)

The new AirTag is available for order starting today on Apple's website and will hit retail shelves on Wednesday, January 28. Because the physical dimensions remain the same, it is fully compatible with all existing keyrings and accessories.
