Kerala bus video row: Bail hearing postponed, woman accused of suicide abetment continues in jail

Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Principal Sessions Court has again postponed the anticipatory bail hearing of Shimjitha Mustafa, the woman arrested over a viral bus harassment video linked to the suicide of U. Deepak, 42. The hearing has been rescheduled for Tuesday after the judge was absent on Monday. Shimjitha remains in custody as the court awaits the next hearing.
Shimjitha, was taken into custody after a case of abetment to suicide was filed following Deepak’s death. He was found dead in his bedroom days after Shimjitha posted a video accusing him of sexual harassment on a private bus.
Police noted that Shimjitha shared the video online without first filing a formal complaint with the police, a factor that has come under scrutiny.
Prosecution opposes bail citing digital evidence
The prosecution has strongly opposed Shimjitha’s bail, citing digital evidence suggesting her alleged direct role in Deepak’s death. It is alleged that she deliberately sought attention by circulating the video on social media rather than following proper legal channels.
Investigators examined CCTV footage from the bus. Video shows Deepak boarding at 12:45 pm carrying a bag and appearing normal, while Shimjitha boarded roughly a minute earlier.
No evidence of an altercation or disturbance was found. Statements from the driver, conductor, and other bus staff confirmed no complaint or unusual incident occurred during the journey. The conductor said Shimjitha did not raise any allegation or seek help while on the bus.
Police also recorded statements from bus employees.
Deepak’s parents told police that the video caused severe mental distress to their son and subjected him to public humiliation over what they claim was a false allegation.
