Kerala is expected to witness widespread rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday, June 3, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing weather alerts across all 14 districts of the state.

Four districts have been placed under an orange alert for very heavy rainfall, while the remaining 10 districts are under a yellow alert for heavy rain.

The IMD has also forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala and Mahe between June 2 and June 8.

Four districts under orange alert

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur on June 3.

An orange alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall. The IMD defines this as rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours at isolated locations.

Yellow alert for 10 districts

A yellow alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

According to the IMD, a yellow alert signifies the likelihood of heavy rainfall, defined as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours at isolated places.

Thunderstorms accompanied by rain are also expected in parts of the state.

Southwest monsoon likely by June 4

The IMD said the southwest monsoon is likely to reach Kerala by June 4.

The monsoon is also expected to advance into more parts of the southwest and southeast Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, parts of Tamil Nadu, and several regions of the Bay of Bengal.

A cyclonic circulation continues over the southeast Arabian Sea off the south Kerala coast.

The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds with speeds of 40-50 kmph across Kerala until June 6.
