Puducherry's 190-year-old Old Lighthouse reopens after renovation and welcomes visitors again

Puducherry's historic 190-year-old Old Lighthouse has reopened to the public after an extensive renovation, giving visitors a chance to experience one of India's oldest coastal landmarks. Built in 1836 during French rule, the 29-metre-tall lighthouse was the first on the Coromandel Coast and remained operational until 1979.

Inaugurated on June 25 and opened to visitors from July 1, the restored lighthouse features rare archival photographs, historical displays and audio-visual presentations tracing Puducherry's maritime and colonial past. Visitors can also climb the spiral staircase to enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Bay of Bengal and the city's iconic French Quarter.

Officials say the restoration aims to preserve the heritage structure while strengthening Puducherry's tourism appeal. The reopening is expected to attract history enthusiasts, architecture lovers and travellers seeking a unique glimpse into the region's rich maritime history and colonial legacy.
