Kozhikode: What if a destination could offer more than a holiday — a chance to heal, rejuvenate and restore? Malabar, with its coastline, forests, traditional healthcare practices, rich cuisine and cultural heritage, holds significant potential to emerge as a health and wellness tourism destination. A session on “Healing Malabar: Health & Wellness Tourism” explored how the region can bring together modern medicine, Ayurveda, physiotherapy, nature and preventive wellness to create a holistic experience for visitors.

The session, “Healing Malabar: Health & Wellness Tourism”, featured Dr. Mili Mani, Dr. Sreekumar and Dr. Akkamma Chandy, and was moderated by P.V. Suraj.

The possibilities were shared by Dr. Mili Mani, Managing Director of Malabar Hospital; Dr. Sreekumar, Managing Director of Calicut Harivihar; and Dr. Akkamma Chandy, Chief Physician of Favorite Kerala Ayurveda and Wellness Centre.

Dr. Mili Mani stated that Kozhikode's coast, Wayanad's forests and nature as a whole offer great potential. We have modern medicine, Ayurveda and physiotherapy. It needs to be developed as a centre of excellence, for which branding is crucial. She said that Malabar should be branded as a place that heals, rejuvenates and restores.

Dr. Sreekumar said that we have a culture comprising good people, good food and art forms such as Theyyam and Thira. There should not be a perception of the region as a waste-filled place; waste management is crucial. He added that instead of blaming the government, people should become aware.

Dr. Akkamma Chandy stated that in Ayurveda, health maintenance is primary, and treatment comes afterwards. Our daily routine, sleep and stress management are all important for well-being.

Everyone also emphasised that while we can enjoy food, it must be healthy, and portion control is equally important. P.V. Suraj, Senior Sub-Editor of the Mathrubhumi Lifestyle Cluster, moderated the session.
