Director Lokesh Kanagaraj addressed speculation around his decision to exit the planned Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan film during a press conference in Chennai on January 26, 2026. He said he backed out after creative differences over the film’s tone, while also sharing updates on Kaithi 2 and the future of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU).

Speaking about the project, often referred to as Thalaivar 173, Lokesh said he had narrated an action-heavy script that both Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan initially liked. However, he explained that the two senior actors later expressed a preference for a lighter film, given their recent run of action roles. Lokesh said he felt unable to write such a film, which led to his decision to step away from the project.

The filmmaker also clarified rumours that the LCU was being shelved. He said Kaithi 2, starring Karthi, was originally planned after Rajinikanth’s Coolie. However, delays caused by his commitments to the Rajinikanth–Kamal Haasan project meant he had to ask the production house for more time. During this period, Karthi signed another director for his next film, leaving Lokesh with a gap before Kaithi 2.

Lokesh added that Mythri Movie Makers had paid him an advance several years ago and that he had long wanted to collaborate with Allu Arjun, which led to the upcoming AA23 project. He said he was confident that his film following the Allu Arjun project would be Kaithi 2 and stressed that the LCU would continue with more films in the future.

Meanwhile, Thalaivar 173 will now be directed by Cibi Chakaravarthi and produced by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran under the Raaj Kamal Films International banner. Filmmaker Sundar C, who was earlier associated with the project, has since exited.
