Tenhipalam: A Postdoctoral fellow from Kerala has contributed to an article on amphibians published in the international scientific journal 'Nature'.
Dr. Sandeep Das, a National Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Zoology of Calicut University, was part of the team that studied and compiled a report on the amphibians in the Western Ghats. Five pictures captured by Sandeep also featured alongside the article.
Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who is also an environmentalist, shared the study, its content and a photo of a galaxy frog (Melanobatrachus indicus) taken by Dr. Sandeep from the Western Ghats on Instagram.
About 100 researchers participated in the article published in 'Nature' on October 4. Besides Sandeep, Dr. Biju, a Keralite from Delhi University, is also a part of the study.
According to the report, at least 300 amphibian species fall under the critically endangered category and more than 90 per cent of Western Ghats amphibian species are found nowhere else on the planet.
"The Western Ghats have a lot of species that have made improvements in their endangered status as a result of effective research, education, and conservation. Everyone has to shoulder responsibility for protecting these species," Sandeep said.
